With winter upon us and many British Columbians hitting the road for the holidays or to hit the slopes, it is important to keep winter driving conditions in mind to ensure the safety of you and your loved ones.
Despite Metro Vancouver’s typically mild weather, the winter months can still be unpredictable, and weather conditions can change rapidly, particularly as you head out of town and into the more mountainous regions.
Those planning on taking the Sea to Sky Highway to visit Squamish or Whistler should be aware that winter rated tires (those either depicting a snowflake or “M+S” symbol) are required from October 1 through to March 31, starting at Horseshoe Bay, heading north. If you are renting a vehicle or travelling in an Evo or other car share service vehicle, ensure that you have the proper equipment before you set out.
If you do not have the appropriate tires, you may be subject to a fine or be turned around by police officers. If the worst happens, and you are involved in an accident, you may be found at fault and potentially denied insurance coverage for failing to follow the regulations.
Visit the government of British Columbia’s website here to view the regulations regarding winter tires throughout the province.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving in winter conditions, then it may be simpler to just avoid the roads altogether, but whatever you choose to do, please stay as safe as possible this season.
