A Practical Introduction to Canada’s Immigration System: Porta Aperta Launches Its First Newcomer Session With Watson Goepel LLP
We were honoured to take part in the launch of Porta Aperta, a new in‑person conversation series hosted at the Il Centro Italian Cultural Centre, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada – West. This initiative is designed to help newcomers navigate key aspects of life in Canada through practical, community‑focused discussions.
For the first session on March 16, our firm was proud to have Anita Boscariol leading the discussion. As a former Assistant Deputy Chair of the Immigration Appeal Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board, Anita brought deep, first‑hand knowledge of Canada’s immigration framework and the challenges newcomers often face.
During the session, Anita provided:
A clear overview of Canada’s immigration pathways
Including economic, family, humanitarian, and temporary residence options.
Insight into common challenges for newcomers
Such as documentation, timelines, navigating status changes, and understanding rights upon arrival.
Practical advice to help newcomers make informed decisions
Empowering participants with clarity on next steps, available resources, and how to approach their immigration process with confidence.
This session served as a valuable starting point for newcomers seeking reliable, accessible information about how the Canadian immigration system works.
Why This Work Matters to Us
Our firm is committed to supporting individuals and families as they establish themselves in Canada. Events like Porta Aperta align closely with our mission: ensuring newcomers have access to accurate legal information, trustworthy guidance, and meaningful community support.
We look forward to future opportunities to contribute to this important initiative and to continue helping newcomers understand their rights, their options, and the pathways available to them.
